Science Intent and Implementation
Intent
The principal focus of science in Sale and Davys School is to enable pupils to experience and observe the natural and humanly-constructed world around them. They are encouraged to be curious and ask questions about what they notice. Pupils are helped to develop their understanding of scientific ideas by using different types of scientific enquiry to answer their own questions. Our intention when planning and delivering the science curriculum at Sale and Davys Primary School is to foster and develop our pupils’ curiosity in the subject. Moreover, we aim to prepare our pupils for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world. We intend learning in science to be through systematic investigations that rely mainly on first hand experiences, leading to them being equipped to answer scientific questions about the world around them. It is our intention that, through investigative science, pupils at Sale and Davys Primary School will continue to deepen their respect for the natural world and all its phenomena, and increase their care and appreciation of it.
Implementation
o Every unit of work begins with a KWL grid.
o Investigations and practical activities give pupils a greater understanding of the concepts and knowledge of science
o pupils are introduced to the language and vocabulary of science
o basic practical skills and their ability to make accurate and appropriate measurements is developed
o Cross curricular links are developed through a range of subjects especially computing.
o learning environments are extended for our pupils via Forest Schools and the local community.
o Science is used to promote a ‘healthy lifestyle’ and closely links with PSCHE
o Working and thinking scientifically, pupils are taught to draw conclusions based on their data and observations. They use evidence to justify their ideas, and use their scientific knowledge and understanding to explain their findings
o A Science Week is planned each year where pupils focus on investigations and we address our Cultural Capital.
o Children are encouraged to know more and remember more through both House challenges and class quizzes.
