Intent

Sale and Davys School community work together to promote and develop the skills, knowledge and appreciation of art and design. Through a rich and varied curriculum, our children are able to use the language of art and design to discuss and form reasoned observations about different artists and designers. They are able to collect ideas, plan,design and create their own pieces of work – using other artists and designers work as a stimuli. Our overall intention, is to develop the understanding of how art and design has shaped our history and contributed to our culture whilst encouraging their own creative thinking and experiences.

Implementation

· Every art unit of work begins with a piece of art as a stimulus.

· Artists covered are chosen to cover a broad and progressive curriculum.

· Artists/designers are chosen to reflect the diverse society in which we live.

· Artists/designers/craftsmen are used to support learning of periods in art and design plus skills and genre.

· Children are given clear goals to work towards building upon the skills/techniques and knowledge required to achieve them.

· All children are taught and encouraged to use the language of art and design whilst learning and discussing work.

· All children are encouraged to reflect upon their own personal opinions of art and design pieces covered.

· All children have a sketchpad to collate work and produce ideas, documenting their journeys.

· Children are encouraged to evaluate and amend work as it progresses.

· House challenges and half termly quizzes are used to recap skills and knowledge.

· Art’s Week enables children to immerse themselves in rich and varied activities following a focused theme and artists.

· Children have opportunities to make wider links with our community working with English Heritage to explore historical and religious art.
