Intent
Sale and Davys School community work together to promote and develop a confidence in the use of the French language and a curiosity of French communities. We do this through fostering a confidence of reading, writing, speaking and listening alongside an appreciation and inquisitiveness of cultural difference. In following this intent we provide children with an opportunity to use and apply their French learning in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language learning.
Implementation
• French is being taught across Key stage 2 classes on a “little and often” basis.
• Following planning scrutiny, all medium term plans show a series of lessons following the objectives from the progression grids.
• Years 3 and 4 are taught during 3x15 minute sessions three times per week.
• Years 5 and 6 are taught during 3x15 minute sessions three times per week.
• Taught sessions include elements of speaking and listening as well as written French.
• Key Stage 2 classes record work in dedicated French exercise books.
• The units are derived from the Language Angels scheme and adapted to match the needs of the pupils.
• The units taught are consistent with the French progression grids on the school website.
• Each Key Stage 2 class uses French greetings and farewells at the beginning and end of each day.
• Reinforcement is used where appropriate, eg days of the week, months, numbers, time, birthdays.
• Years 3 and 4 devote a topic to “France”, immersing the children through the creative curriculum.
• French greetings are used regularly in Years 1 and 2. Reception Class introduce greetings in the Spring and Summer terms.
